The Problem They Solve

Write it all in LangChain? Sure, but non-full-stack developers may struggle. Use a no-code platform? Functionality is often too limited.

Dify's most direct competitor is Flowise — both are open-source visual LLM builders. But Dify's completeness is significantly higher: it includes app templates, user management, log monitoring, and multiple publishing options, while Flowise is more of a developer-oriented tool.
What I Actually Saw
The Good: From installation to running your first RAG application takes about 15 minutes. One Docker Compose command to start, upload a few PDF files, configure your OpenAI API key, and you have a "ask anything about my documents" chatbot up and running. The workflow builder experience is solid — at least 5x faster than writing LangChain code, and visual debugging makes troubleshooting much simpler. Support for Chinese LLMs is a unique advantage — I set up an Agent using Tongyi Qianwen for a project, and configuring it on Dify saved a massive amount of glue code compared to calling the API directly.
The Complicated: Dify's workflows hit a ceiling at higher complexity levels. If you need more than 20 nodes, multiple layers of nesting, or complex state management, the visual orchestration gets messy. Compared to LangGraph's code-based orchestration, Dify's expressive power falls short in extreme-complexity scenarios. Also, while the Community edition is fully featured, performance tuning and high-availability deployment require operational expertise — for teams unfamiliar with Docker and PostgreSQL, self-hosting isn't quite as "one-click" as advertised.
The Reality: The gap between 100K stars and $11.5M in funding is stark. LangChain: 118K stars paired with $260M in funding and a $1.25B valuation. Dify: 100K stars paired with $11.5M. The reasons likely include: Dify started commercializing later (Cloud edition pricing is low), investors are predominantly Chinese institutions (lower participation from Western VCs), and the "open-source + fully free" model makes paid conversion harder. Dify's central challenge: how to build a sustainable business model without crippling the open-source edition.
My Verdict
Dify is currently the best open-source solution for "building LLM applications." It has achieved the highest level of completeness among competitors in visual building, RAG pipelines, and multi-model support. 100K stars prove the product has strong pull. But $11.5M in funding is "under-armed" for the AI space — it needs to accelerate commercialization: either create an Enterprise edition differentiated enough that large customers will pay for it, or scale up the paid user base through Cloud PLG.
For Chinese entrepreneurs and the Chinese market, Dify may be the best choice — comprehensive Chinese LLM support, an active community, well-localized Chinese documentation, and zero-latency deployment on domestic servers. That's something neither LangChain nor Flowise can offer.
