What I've Actually Seen
The good: Claude Code has genuinely transformed my development workflow. For understanding and modifying complex codebases, Opus 4.6 noticeably outperforms the competition. Long-context stability is also why I chose it as my primary tool — consistency across a 200K window is something many models simply can't deliver. The pace of enterprise customer growth (500+ million-dollar accounts) validates real market demand.
The complicated: A $380 billion valuation against $14 billion in annualized revenue puts the P/S ratio around 27x. That multiple is understandable during a hypergrowth phase, but it means Anthropic must sustain triple-digit growth to justify the valuation. The competitive window on model capability is narrowing — every time Anthropic pulls ahead, OpenAI and Google close the gap within 3–6 months.
The reality: Not open-sourcing means Anthropic is entirely dependent on the moat of its closed-source models. Once open-source models (Llama, Mistral) reach 80–90% of that capability, price wars will erode API revenue. And a $30 billion Series G carries enormous dilution and return expectations — pressure toward an IPO is mounting.
My Verdict
- ✅ Good fit: Enterprises and developers who need the best reasoning and code capabilities; financial and healthcare customers with AI safety compliance requirements; engineers using Claude Code for daily development (speaking from real experience)
- ❌ Skip if: Your use case only requires a "good enough" model (open-source options are far cheaper); you need multimodal generation capabilities (Anthropic isn't the strongest on image/video); you're on a tight budget and brand-agnostic about models
Bottom line: Anthropic is the most technically rigorous company in the AI model market today with the clearest safety narrative, but a $380 billion valuation means it must prove over the next two years that it's more than "the second-place OpenAI."
